Editor’s Letter
Welcome To Our Creative Home
September 2022
hen we launched the Apartment 3C brand earlier this summer, we had many discussions about what it meant to be part of a creative home. We weren’t necessarily talking about the actual homes we were living in, but the one we were collectively building in a metaphorical sense—a space where we all would feel comfortable bringing our individual backgrounds and strengths to a partnership where we championed each other as artists to make work that we were passionate about and proud of.
In June, our website went live and we’ve since felt the momentum of potential as our team has collaborated closely to bring new projects to fruition each month. In July, we launched the A3C Reads Book Club in partnership with the New York Public Library. We’ve established relationships with authors, conducted video interviews, created content for our social media channels and newsletter, engaged readers and audiences in digital discussions, and promoted the work of the Young Lions Fiction Award finalists. We’ve solidified the programming for our first full annual season of the book club, and we are excited to share our remaining books of the month that we have slated through June, 2023.

September’s Book of the Month was Something New Under the Sun, by Alexandra Kleeman. If you haven’t read Jen’s book review or watched her author interview, you’ll be inspired to hear about Alexandra Kleeman’s writing process and how she created her critically acclaimed novel over the span of two years.
In August, we launched The Happy, Not Satisfied Podcast as an Apartment 3C Production. Dan hosts the show, which is an extension of his personal philosophy and the digital community he’s been building since 2020. He talks to guests who have found success across a variety of industries about what most people don’t see from someone’s journey of growth—everything that’s beneath the surface of the iceberg that built them, to the moment when preparation met opportunity and they created their own luck. Each story has been fascinating and vastly different from the next: from an Oscar-winning producer to a school district superintendent, to a fitness public figure and coach on NBC’s The Biggest Loser, these conversations will leave you feeling motivated to work toward your greatest personal potential.
Jen participated as a juror this month for Through Her Lens: The Tribeca and Chanel Women’s Filmmaker Program in New York. Founded in 2015 by Tribeca and Chanel and in collaboration with Pulse Films, the mentorship program provides industry support, artistic development and funding to emerging women writers and directors.
“When I arrived in New York, I looked at the program and thought how much I’d love to participate in all of these events myself, to work with the incredible mentors and attend the master classes. This is an industry in which nobody really tells you how to start or how to figure out what to do next. There are no rules, and everyone has a different journey and a different path. That’s why programs like this, offering mentorships and experiences, are so important. It helps to democratize the artistry of what we’re doing.”
- Jennifer Morrison for The Hollywood Reporter
This year’s leadership committee of jurors, mentors and masterclass participants included actor and director Jennifer Morrison, producer Bonnie Hammer, actor Alexandra Shipp, producer Paula Weinstein and actor Thuso Mbedu.
Congratulations to filmmakers Wendy Tang and Hongwei Wu, whose short film Fishtank was named as the winning recipient of this year’s program.
On the television front, September brought a milestone to celebrate, as Gerry’s latest acting project, Devil in Ohio, premiered on Netflix and became the number one show worldwide.
We also produced our first Living Room Concert event, JMS Live — a musical evening of original songs performed by singer-songwriter Julia Morrison Summers, accompanied by Taso Comanescu on guitar and Lana McKissack on vocals.
The performances were electric, and sharing the experience of watching live music with a room full of special friends of Apartment 3C made for an evening we won’t soon forget.
We’ll be sharing videos of the performance on our YouTube channel and social media accounts throughout the month of October for a larger audience to enjoy.
Lastly, we are launching ELEANORA Editorials this month as one of our new digital content series, which means these Editor’s Letters will become a recurring creative memo of all goings-on with Apartment 3C Productions. As an editor and content creator who has always been drawn to telling stories and sharing voices that have sometimes been overlooked, either throughout history or in the present, I’m looking forward to creating and curating content produced in our creative home that champions the outsider voice.
